SPH Foundation gives out Inaugural Lim Kim San Memorial Scholarships

Singapore, 31 October 2006 The Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) Foundation is pleased to announce that it has awarded scholarships to four outstanding students at the inaugural Lim Kim San Memorial Scholarship awards presentation held at the SPH News Centre auditorium this morning.

The Lim Kim San Memorial Scholarship was set up in August this year to recognise the outstanding contributions of the late Mr Lim to Singapore.

“The late Mr Lim Kim San was instrumental in setting up the SPH Foundation in January 2003. Mr Lim’s vision for the Foundation was to build a community that embraces language enrichment, creativity, diversity, healthy living and sports. And it is this very vision that has formed the basis for the selection of our four scholars today. These four scholars have all excelled academically and in their co-curricular activities,” said Dr Tony Tan, Chairman of the SPH Foundation.

“With tenacity, determination and a little help from the SPH Foundation, I am confident that our scholars will go far in their careers to be men and women who will contribute for the betterment of our society.”

As a charity and an Institution of Public Character, the SPH Foundation firmly believes in promoting life-long learning in Singapore, especially efforts to improve proficiency in English and the mother tongue.

The Lim Kim San Memorial Scholarship exemplifies this belief and Mr Lim’s love of the languages.

Targeted at students from low-income families, these bond-free scholarships are tenable for full-time courses in English, Malay, Chinese and Indian studies at National University of Singapore (NUS), Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore Management University (SMU) and SIM University (UniSIM).

Each Lim Kim San Memorial Scholarship is valued at about S$40,000 for up to a 4-year honours degree, an amount that covers all course and tuition fees, and includes a living and book allowance as well.

In his speech at today’s ceremony, Dr Tan also urged the scholars to be willing to take on challenges and be determined to implement measures as deemed best for Singapore and for the organizations for which they have a responsibility.

The profiles of the four scholars can be found in Annex A and the full text of Dr Tan’s speech can be found in Annex B below. The original poems penned and performed by the four scholars during the award presentation ceremony can be found in Annex C.
