27 Awarded SPH And SPH Foundation Scholarships

Singapore, 17 July 2008Leading media group Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) and the SPH Foundation today awarded scholarships to 27 bright and talented young recipients at a joint scholarship awards presentation ceremony held at the SPH News Centre auditorium this afternoon.

Among the scholars were seven who received the prestigious SPH Journalism Scholarship and four who clinched the SPH Foundation’s Lim Kim San Memorial Scholarship for language studies. The awards were presented by Dr Tony Tan, Chairman of SPH and the SPH Foundation.

In his speech, he highlighted quality journalism as being vital to SPH’s continual success as a media organisation. He also lauded the merits of journalism as a career of choice.

Said Dr Tan: “The life of a journalist in today’s fast-changing media landscape is exciting, challenging and rewarding. A career in journalism is like no other.”

Citing the experience of reporters on the scene at the recent earthquake at Sichuan, Dr Tan added that “our journalists who covered the Sichuan earthquake tragedy were commended for their good work. They trekked from one quake-hit area to another, filing touching human interest stories of love and determination. It was a life-changing assignment for them, as they were personally inspired by the victims’ resilience and courage in the face of adversity”.

Dr Tan also announced the opening of SPH’s journalism scholarships to undergraduates who are already into their studies. He said that these would be awarded in the later part of the year to deserving candidates.

In addition, scholarships would also be offered to graduating university students who wish to pursue their Masters degree. The first of such an award was presented this afternoon to Derrick Ho Zhi Wen to pursue a Master of Arts in Journalism at the University of Missouri, which developed the world’s first journalism course in 1908.

"I intend to specialisein online journalism as I believe that is where there is great potential as SPH actively develops its business in new media platforms. I am pleased to be awarded this scholarship and when I return upon completion of my studies, I hope to be able to contribute significantly towards SPH's new media initiatives," said Derrick.

Continuing with SPH’s long-standing practice of recognising the contributions of staff and newspaper vendors to the success of the company, 16 scholarships were also awarded to their children. Of these, six werefor undergraduate degrees, four for courses at polytechnics, and six for pre-university studies at junior colleges.

Four students pursuing language studies also received the Lim Kim San Memorial Scholarship awards from Dr Tony Tan. These awards, set up in August 2006 by the SPH Foundation, are given to outstanding needy students pursuing undergraduate studies in English language or the mother tongue at our local universities.

Targeted at students from low-income families, these bond-free scholarship awards are aimed at helping deserving students from families with challenging financial circumstances fulfill their dreams of pursuing higher education. The SPH Foundation hopes that these scholars would eventually establish successful careers and contribute to society.
