26 Awarded SPH and SPH Foundation scholarships

Singapore, 12 July 2010 Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) and SPH Foundation today presented a total of 26 scholarships at the annual scholarship awards presentation ceremony held at the SPH News Centre.

Dr Tony Tan, Chairman of SPH and SPH Foundation, gave out six SPH Journalism scholarships and six SPH Foundation Lim Kim San Memorial scholarships.

In addition, 14 scholarships were presented to the children of SPH staff and newspaper vendors by Mr Alan Chan, Chief Executive Officer of SPH.

In his opening address, Dr Tony Tan spoke about the challenges of being a journalist in the digital era. He said: “Our journalists have to deliver timely news, insightful analyses and well-argued commentaries to provide what the consumers want and demand, and in order to stand out from the information explosion. They have to earn the trust and respect of consumers who choose to stay with them for reliable sources of news and information, even when they are spoilt for choice.”

Dr Tan also highlighted the need for SPH journalists to be strong content providers, regardless of the media platform they are working for.

He said: “With 17 newspaper titles, more than 100 magazines, and a variety of internet and broadcast products, there is no better place to hone a journalist's skills for different media platforms. While the basics of high-quality journalism are the same, journalists have to learn how to capitalise on the strengths of different media, and to strike the right chord at the right time with the right content.”

Mr Danson Cheong, an SPH Journalism scholarship award recipient who will be studying for his Bachelor of Communication Studies at Nanyang Technological University, said: "As a journalist, I get to see a whole new side of the world. I learn not to take things at face-value and to probe deeper into issues.A career with SPH would allow me to develop my talents and give me the chance to expand my horizons."

Another SPH Journalism scholar, Mr Fredrick Lai who will be pursuing his Bachelor of Communication Studies at the National Chengchi University in Taiwan, said: "As a journalist, it gives me great satisfaction when we break important news to the public. We are always the first to be at the scene, and are always in the midst of the action.”

He added: “Being a journalist with SPH would mean that I get to put my journalistic skills to good use across the multimedia platforms that SPH offers. That to me provides the greatest job satisfaction."

SPH Foundation Lim Kim San Memorial Scholarship

The SPH Foundation has awarded the Lim Kim San Memorial Scholarships to outstanding students pursuing languages at local tertiary institutions annually since 2006. These bond-free scholarships are targeted at helping deserving students from low-income families fund their language studies degree programmes at local universities.

One of the six Lim Kim San Memorial Scholarship recipients is Mr Mohamed Azmil Bin Mohamed Alias, who is currently pursuing Malay Studies at the National University of Singapore. He said: "The Lim Kim San Memorial Scholarship means a lot to me, as it allows me the opportunity to continue pursuing my studies while devoting more time contributing back to society in areas such as the literary arts and community work, especially for the Malay/Muslim community.”
