SPH Foundation Arts Fund buys tickets for 495 children to enjoy musical play

Singapore, 21 July 2011The Singapore Press Holdings Foundation (SPH Foundation) will be giving a theatrical treat to 495 children from seven charity organisations this Saturday, 23 July, at LASALLE College of the Arts' Singapore Airlines Theatre. With the help of the SPH Foundation Arts Fund, children from the following organisations will get to enjoy the latest run of The Rainbow Fish – An Ocean Tale, a popular musical play produced by local children's theatre company, I Theatre.

  • Towner Gardens School - Minds
  • AWWA Educational Services
  • Woodlands Gardens School
  • Eden School
  • Spastic Children Association
  • Rainbow Centre
  • Tanjong Pagar Family Service Centre

The SPH Foundation Arts Fund was launched on 20 April this year, when the SPH Foundation invited more than 100 elderly from various charity organisations to enjoy 881 The Musical by Toy Factory Productions at the Esplanade Theatre.

The objective of the SPH Foundation Arts Fund is to give the underprivileged the opportunity to enjoy and appreciate the arts. At the same time, it will also help local arts groups to produce quality productions and reach out to more audiences.

In October, SPH Foundation will purchase tickets for more than 600 children to enjoy I Theatre's next show, Elves and The Shoemaker, at the Drama Centre.

Besides I Theatre and Toy Factory Productions, other theatre groups that the SPH Foundation Arts Fund is supporting this year include The Theatre Practice, the Singapore Repertory Theatre and Drama Box.

Ms Ginney Lim, General Manager of SPH Foundation, said: “Exposure to the arts is important to children as it enriches their minds and develops their creativity and imagination. Through the SPH Foundation Arts Fund, we are pleased to be able to help more than 1,000 underprivileged children enjoy the plays by I Theatre, which are both entertaining and educational."

Mr Brian Seward, Artistic Director of I Theatre, said: “Children are the future of Singapore, and every child should have the chance of an all rounded education - including exposure to the Arts. I would like to thank the SPH Foundation for giving these children the opportunity to enjoy this production. It will challenge, engage and enlighten them - and hopefully open a new world of possibiities for them."

Based on Marcus Pfister’s award-winning storybook, The Rainbow Fish – An Ocean Tale is one of I Theatre’s most popular musical plays. Featuring music composed by Belinda Foo, the play is written and directed by Brian Seward, the company's Artistic Director, and stars local theatre actress Siti Khalijah in the titular role. The audience will be enthralled by the various techniques used, such as black light theatre, as well as the mind blowing original puppet design by the company’s resident puppet master Paul Pistore, who specialises in animatronics and has been involved in a number of Hollywood blockbusters.

I Theatre is restaging The Rainbow Fish – An Ocean Tale as part of its 10th Anniversary season due to popular demand and good response from previous runs. The latest version will have an updated script that includes new characters and involves greater interaction with the audience interaction.

Set up in 2003, the SPH Foundation has been a strong supporter of both the arts and charity sectors. Apart from sponsoring arts productions, it has also groomed literary talents in Singapore through its sponsorship of the Singapore Writers Festival and the SPH-NAC Golden Point Award. Together with SPH, it has contributed to charities through its annual charity giving. In addition, SPH Foundation also supports education, wildlife conservation and sports.
