SPH and SPH Foundation donate $400,000 to 20 charities

Singapore, 01 June 2012 – Singapore Press Holdings Limited (SPH) and SPH Foundation today contributed $400,000 to 20 charities under the Community Chest.

Dr Lee Boon Yang, Chairman of SPH and SPH Foundation, presented the cheque to Ms Jennie Chua, Chairman of Community Chest and RADM Kwek Siew Jin, President of National Council of Social Service, at a ceremony held at the Singapore Conference Hall this evening.

SPH donated to 10 charities that are serving the elderly, while SPH Foundation contributed to 10 charities serving needy children and youth. Each charity will receive $20,000 in cash.

Dr Lee said: “As a media organisation, we owe our success to Singaporeans' support and confidence. Hence, we believe it is our responsibility to give back to the community. We hope that our donations will help improve the lives of the less fortunate around us, and inspire others to do the same."

Ms Jennie Chua said: “For nearly a decade, SPH and SPH Foundation have been active donors to the Community Chest, contributing over $3 million towards our efforts in helping the less fortunate. We value the sustained donations of long-time partners like SPH and SPH Foundation as Community Chest steps up our fund raising efforts this year to support more people in need. Their generous donation of $400,000 this year will be designated to 20 programmes which provide education and therapy to children with special needs, counselling for at-risk youth and specialised care for the frail and lonely elderly. We thank SPH and SPH Foundation for their steadfast support and commitment.”

One of the beneficiaries this year is 18-year-old Nur Nadzirah Binte Mohamed Ismail. Her father passed away from Huntington Disease when she was 10 years old. Her mother brought her and her siblings up as a single parent. Her eldest brother is now suffering from the same disease. After joining Persatuan Persuratan Pemuda Pemudi Melayu – ESU (4PM) in 2011, the voluntary welfare organisation counselled and motivated her to gain back her self esteem. She is now a class leader in her school.

Another beneficiary is 80-year-old Lim Ah Hin. Mr Lim has been receiving help from the Singapore Leprosy Relief Association (SILRA) since losing his wife and his job as a cleaner in 2000. With his only son now in the Drug Rehabilitative Centre and no relatives around to help him, SILRA provided him with food, accommodation, healthcare and also kept him occupied with recreational activities. Mr Lim has found peace, happiness and contentment after being admitted into SILRA in 2001.

Ms Nur Nadzirah and Mr Lim were amongst the 180 beneficiaries and care givers from the 20 charities invited to the cheque presentation ceremony cum reception. After the ceremony, they were treated to a concert called Drumming from East to West, featuring the Singapore Chinese Orchestra and internationally acclaimed percussionist Dame Evelyn Glennie.

Both SPH and SPH Foundation have championed various charitable causes over the years. Besides giving to charity, their diverse corporate social responsibility efforts include supporting the arts, education, conservation, and sports, among others. For its contributions to various social causes, SPH was the sole recipient of the prestigious President's Social Service Award (Corporate Category) last year.
