Eminent Speakers Series 2013 presents Jiao Tong and Leung Man Tao

Singapore, 04 June 2013 – Two renowned literary figures will be speaking on the topic of food and culture at this year's Eminent Speakers Series (名人演说系列) on 8 June 2013 Saturday at the SPH News Centre Auditorium. 

Mr Jiao Tong (焦桐), Taiwan publisher and writer, and Mr Leung Man Tao (梁文道), Hong Kong writer and TV commentator, will address the topic "A Bite of Culture, A Cultural Perspective of Chinese Cuisine" 《舌尖上的文化》at this year's Eminent Speakers Series, jointly organised by Lianhe Zaobao and Business China, and supported by the Singapore Press Holdings Foundation (SPH Foundation). 

Back for the sixth year, the series invites prominent personalities who are highly regarded authorities in their respective fields to share their unique perspectives and insights on a broad range of topics, including current affairs, politics, business, economics, media, culture and the arts. 

Past eminent speakers include Prof Liu Ji, Honorary President of China Europe International Business School (CEIBS), Mr Yao Jing Yuan, Former Chief Economist of China’s National Bureau of Statistics; Professor Justin Lin Yifu, Chief Economist of The World Bank; Mr Qian Gang, Director of China Media Project, Journalism and Media Studies Centre at the University of Hong Kong; Mr Jin Wei-Tsun, Founder of Business Weekly; Mr Yau Lop Poon, Editor-in-Chief of Yazhou Zhoukan and Mr Nan Fangshuo, Taiwan’s leading political commentator. 

The talk, which is conducted in Mandarin, will be followed by a Q & A session chaired by Ms Lee Chor Lin (李楚琳), Director, National Museum of Singapore.

Synopsis of Talk:
Food culture reflects the development and changes in a society. It is also a form of language, and a reflection of humanism in the history of mankind. Food culture is especially prominent in the Chinese culture, and is certainly an essential window through which to further understand the Chinese psyche. This year's Eminent Speakers Series will focus on the theme of food culture and explore the many facets of the Chinese community through food. 

Speakers' Bio-data

About Jiao Tong
Jiao Tong was born in Kaohsiung City in 1956. He is now an associate professor at the National Central University. 
He has published numerous poetry and essay collections including Poetry Jiao Tong :1980-1993 《焦桐诗集:1980-1993》, Specimens of Youth 《青春标本》; Erotic Recipes: A Complete Menu for Male Potency Enhancement 《完全壮阳食谱》 and Tasty Taiwan Trilogy: A Taste of Taiwan, A Flavor of Taiwan and A Treat of Taiwan 台湾味道三部曲——《台湾味道》《台湾肚皮》《台湾舌头》. His poetic works have been published in English, French and Japanese.

Jiao Tong is a pen name for Chen-Fu Yeh (叶振富). He received his Masters of Arts from Chinese Culture University and his doctorate degree from the Institute of Comparative Literature, Fu Jen Catholic University. He founded the Fish & Fish International Co. Ltd. in 2001 and Gastronomy Magazine 《饮食》 in 2005. 

About Leung Man Tao
Born in Hong Kong in 1970 and raised in Taiwan, Leung came back to Hong Kong in 1985 to continue his studies, and graduated from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Department of Philosophy. 

Leung has been actively involved in different cultural, art, educational and media-related work, and is known for passionately supporting various social movements. He was director or chairman of a number of non-governmental and art organisations including president of Cattle Depot Artist Village, director of Commercial Radio Hong Kong Channel 1, and guest lecturer at the University of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. 
Since 1988, Leung has been publishing reviews of theatre, music, movies, and books, and has written numerous cultural and political critiques.
Leung is currently a commentator with Phoenix Hong Kong Channel, hosting Eight Minutes of Reading and Behind the Headline with Wen Tao.
