Shop For Your School is back

Singapore, 23 February 2015 – The Shop For Your School campaign presented by Singapore Press Holdings Foundation (SPH Foundation) is back for its second year. Organised by Little Red Dot, a student publication by The Straits Times for primary schools, the campaign rewards the top three student-led proposals on how to make a difference to their school, peers or community.

Targeted at primary school students, the top three schools with winning ideas will be awarded $5,000, $3,000 and $2,000 cash prizes respectively, to turn their proposals into reality.

To participate, primary school students are required to come up with a plan on how to improve their school or community, and create a wish list of how the prize money will be spent. This year, the campaign’s theme is “Every neighbour matters: Lending a helping hand to your neighbour in need”. Entry forms for the competition will be available in the Little Red Dot from February 24 to March 24. Schools can submit multiple entries either by post or by email. All entries are to reach the Editor of Little Red Dot before March 27.

Last year, Innova Primary School won the inaugural Shop For Your School campaign with its proposed partnership with Fei Yue Family Centre, to help low-income and single-parent families in its neighbourhood. Temasek Primary School, runner-up for the campaign, proposed to build an eco-friendly school garden where produce grown will be given to senior citizens’ homes and the school canteen’s stall owners. Third-place winner, Pathlight School won based on their proposal to improve the quality of student life with better learning resources such as books and bookshelves.

The Shop For Your School campaign supports the Ministry of Education’s Character and Citizenship Education syllabus, which aims to educate primary school students to be responsible to family and community, and to understand their roles in shaping the future of Singapore.

This year we are looking for ideas with the most heart, that help those with the most pressing needs, and creative ways to solve problems. I can't wait to see what they come up with!”
