27 teams take part in sixth edition of SPH Foundation National Primary Schools Tchoukball Championships

Singapore, 12 May 2017 – Singapore Press Holdings Foundation (SPH Foundation) will host the sixth edition of the SPH Foundation National Primary Schools Tchoukball Championships this year. The Boys Senior Division finals will be held on 17 May, Wednesday, at Farrer Park Primary School, while the Girls Senior Division finals will be held on 19 May, Friday, at Junyuan Primary School.

Organised by Tchoukball Association of Singapore (TBAS), the event comprises two categories, namely the Senior Division (for boys and girls aged 13 years and under), and the Junior Division (for boys and girls aged 11 years and under). The Junior Division will be played in November.

Tchoukball is a non-contact team sport that was invented in 1970 and emphasises on speed, teamwork and strategy. It involves a unique set of rules and elements of volleyball, basketball and handball. The sport can be played by anyone regardless of varying physical and sporting abilities.

The sport is swiftly gaining popularity with over 37 associate clubs registered with the TBAS and is now being played in more than 130 schools across Singapore. Tchoukball is now an official sport in the annual POL-ITE Games and Singapore University Games (SUniG). This additional platform allows even more students to play leisurely or competitively. Many secondary schools, ITEs, polytechnic and universities have formed teams to pit their skills through various competitions held throughout the year.

Ms Ginney Lim, General Manager of SPH Foundation, said: "Since SPH Foundation's sponsorship of this event in 2012, tchoukball has been growing in popularity in Singapore. We are happy to be the title sponsor of such a meaningful sport that inculcates values such as teamwork, discipline and sportsmanship amongst the participants."

Mr Rezal Ramli, President, TBAS, said: "Into its sixth year, the National Primary Schools Tchoukball Championships showcases the unwavering commitment SPH Foundation and TBAS have to the Tchoukball community. It continues to provide an excellent platform for aspiring players to display their talents. We salute the dedication SPH Foundation has for the nurturing of Tchoukball athletes in Singapore."
