SPH Foundation gives out Inaugural Lim Kim San Memorial Scholarships

Four outstanding students received the inaugural Lim Kim San Memorial Scholarship awards from Dr Tony Tan at a presentation held at the SPH News Centre auditorium on 31 October 2006.

Mr Ng Mei Xin and Mr Lee Chong Leong, are currently pursuing Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Chinese at Nanyang Technological University. The other two scholars, Ms Siti Nurhani bte Kamsani and Ms Mangeswary Eravanan, are from National University of Singapore. Ms Nurhani is a final-year student reading Bachelor of Arts (Malay Studies & Sociology) while Ms Eravanan is pursuing Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in English.

The Lim Kim San Memorial Scholarship was set up in August 2006 to recognise the outstanding contributions of the late Mr Lim to Singapore.

“The late Mr Lim Kim San was instrumental in setting up the SPH Foundation in January 2003. Mr Lim’s vision for the Foundation was to build a community that embraces language enrichment, creativity, diversity, healthy living and sports. And it is this very vision that has formed the basis for the selection of our four scholars today. These four scholars have all excelled academically and in their co-curricular activities,” said Dr Tony Tan, Chairman of the SPH Foundation.

Targeted at students from low-income families, these bond-free scholarships are tenable for full-time courses in English, Malay, Chinese and Indian studies at National University of Singapore (NUS), Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore Management University (SMU) and SIM University (UniSIM).

Each Lim Kim San Memorial Scholarship is valued at about S$40,000 for up to a 4-year honours degree, an amount that covers all course and tuition fees, and includes a living and book allowance as well.
