SPH Foundation sets up Lim Kim San Memorial Scholarship

Singapore, 11 August 2006 The Singapore Press Holdings Foundation has set up the Lim Kim San Memorial Scholarship in recognition of the outstanding contributions of Mr Lim Kim San to Singapore.

Targeted at Singaporeans from low-income families, the scholarship will be tenable for full-time courses in English, Chinese, Malay and Indian Studies at the National University of Singapore (NUS), Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore Management University (SMU) and SIM University (UniSIM).

Each Lim Kim San Memorial Scholarship is valued at about S$40,000 for up to a 4-year honours degree, an amount that covers all course and tuition fees, and includes a living and book allowance as well.

The SPH Foundation has committed to sponsoring up to eight students at any given time.

Applications for the scholarships open on 12 August 2006.

“The late Mr Lim Kim San’s illustrious career and distinguished service to Singapore, the public sector and private enterprise is exemplary par excellence. His life story provides invaluable lessons for our future leaders - courageous men and women who will emulate him, bear his fighting spirit and lead our nation into a new era of growth and development,” said Dr Tony Tan, who succeeded the late Mr Lim as Chairman of the SPH Foundation on January 1st this year.

“With the Lim Kim San Memorial Scholarship, the SPH Foundation hopes to play a part to develop people who can contribute to Singapore in many ways as significantly as Mr Lim.”

Mr Lim Kim San gave up a successful career in banking to join the government in 1963, and spent the 18 years as a Cabinet minister before retiring from politics in 1981.

He joined SPH in 1988, and for the next 14 years helped to build up the local media industry as Executive Chairman of the Media Group. He retired as Chairman in late 2002, but stayed on for another three years as Senior Advisor to SPH. He retired last year.

Mr Lim was instrumental in the establishment of the SPH Foundation in January 2003. His vision for the Foundation was for it to help build a community that embraces language enrichment, creativity, diversity, healthy living and sports. This vision forms the basis for selecting well-rounded applicants, with good academic and co-curricular records.

“Through the Lim Kim San Memorial Scholarship, the Foundation hopes to inspire and open up more opportunities to develop young Singaporeans, regardless of their family backgrounds, to step out and serve the country as Mr Lim had done,” said Dr Robert Loh, Chairman of the Lim Kim San Memorial Scholarship Selection Committee.

"Our late father would have been most honoured to have a Memorial Scholarship in his name. His vision of assisting underprivileged Singaporeans during his life-time will be continued through the award of these scholarships. The family is grateful to the SPH Foundation for initiating these awards," said Mr Lim’s children, who gave their blessings to the setting up of the scholarship.

As a charity and an Institution of Public Character, the SPH Foundation firmly believes in promoting life-long learning in Singapore, especially efforts to improve proficiency in English and the mother tongue.

The Lim Kim San Memorial Scholarship exemplifies this belief and Mr Lim’s love of the languages.
