SPH Foundation hosts National Para-Swimming Championships for sixth year

Singapore, 24 August 2016 – The sixth edition of the Singapore Press Holdings Foundation (SPH Foundation) National Para-Swimming Championships will return to Toa Payoh Swimming Complex on 27 August. The event, a highlight in the SDSC's annual sporting calendar, is jointly organised by the Singapore Disability Sports Council (SDSC). It is now into its 35th year and is aimed at creating opportunities for persons with disabilities to swim at a competitive level.

The event's Guest-of-Honour is Mr Lim Puay Tiak, Board Member of SDSC.

116 para-athletes from 16 special schools, associations and clubs are expected to compete. The participants are assigned to different categories and events based on their disabilities, and will participate in all four swim strokes, as well as the freestyle relay. Paralympians Theresa Goh and Yip Pin Xiu, who will be representing Singapore at the Rio paralympics next month, have taken part and excelled in past editions of the competition.

Ms Ginney Lim, General Manager, SPH Foundation, said: "SPH Foundation is pleased to be the title sponsor of such a meaningful event for the sixth consecutive year. This reaffirms our commitment to build and empower communities. The Championships has always seen a high level of participation. Both Theresa Goh and Yip Pin Xiu have proved that with passion and determination, anything is achievable. We hope to see them continue to fly the Singapore flag high and wish them all the best at the Rio Paralympics."

Mr Henry Tan, Executive Director of Singapore Disability Sports Council: “I would like to thank our sponsor SPH Foundation for once again giving our athletes a chance to participate in this year¹s National Para Swimming competition. This competition provides the platform for athletes to experience the joy of winning and accepting defeat as part and parcel of the sport. Through their participation we hope that they will be motivated to be the best in what they put their mind to.”
