SPH and SPH Foundation award scholarships to 29 recipients
- 2 SPH Journalism Scholarships presented
- 14 in-house scholarships presented to children of staff and newspaper vendors
- 13 Lim Kim San Memorial Scholarships awarded to students from modest backgrounds, with no bond
Singapore, 27 July 2020 - Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) and Singapore Press Holdings Foundation (SPH Foundation) presented a total of 29 scholarships during a virtual scholarship awards ceremony held today.
Dr Lee Boon Yang, Chairman of SPH and SPH Foundation, congratulated the scholarship recipients and their parents in his opening address.
In his speech, he also addressed the Covid-19 pandemic and how it has affected the media.
He said: "The pandemic has also emphasised the important role of media in our life. Media provides credible news and information to the community. In fact, we are seeing an increase in subscriptions and readerships especially for our digital titles. More people are turning to trusted media sources for reliable information to cope with the uncertainties brought on by the coronavirus."
There were 2 recipients for the SPH Journalism Scholarship.
One of the recipients, Mr Wong Yang, is an intern at The New Paper. He will be reading Comparative Literature and Social Anthropology at the University of St Andrews in Scotland.
He said: “It is an immense privilege to be awarded the scholarship. Interning at The New Paper for the last six months has allowed me to meet people from all walks of life for articles on a diverse range of topics. Being a young journalist as the coronavirus descended upon Singapore also gave me the chance to gain an intimate understanding of how the pandemic has disrupted lives and livelihoods. The experience has made me believe, more than ever, in the potential for journalism to drive social change. I am very thankful to have the faith and guidance of my colleagues, editors, friends and family, and I am determined to make them proud."
14 scholarships were also awarded to the children of SPH staff and newspaper vendors. These awards serve as a form of recognition of the children’s hard work and the loyal service of their parents to SPH.
There were also 13 recipients of the Lim Kim San Memorial Scholarships. The bond-free scholarships have helped deserving students from modest family backgrounds further their degree programmes in languages, linguistics and the humanities at local universities since 2006 .
One of the recipients is Ms Adelena Oh, who is reading English at the Nanyang Technological University.
She said: “It is an honour and blessing to receive this scholarship, especially due to the circumstances the current pandemic had landed my family in. I'm really grateful there's no longer a need to worry about whether I can afford to get through each semester and may focus on excelling in both my major in English Literature and minor in Modern Languages. The award would immensely help me in working towards my long-term goal of using stories, various languages and digital media to empower youths from troubled backgrounds, unconventional family units and diverse cultures to reach their full potential.”
